Τhe University College London (UCL) at LaSTcity

On the 2nd of March 2026, LaSTcity welcomed a large group of postgraduate students from the Department of Geography at University College London (UCL). The visit, which brought together approximately 40–50 students, took place in the context of a study trip to Athens and was linked to an ongoing assignment focused on developing an “Imaginary Geography of Athens”.

The session featured an introductory lecture delivered by Thomas Maloutas, focusing on the social geography of Athens. The presentation addressed key dimensions of the city’s socio-spatial structure, highlighting processes and patterns that resonate beyond the Athenian case and contribute to broader discussions in urban studies. Particular emphasis was placed on the publication 37 Stories from the Athenian Apartment Blocks and its contribution to the study of Athens, as well as on the role of the Athens Social Atlas as a research tool for understanding the city’s socio-demographic and spatial transformations.

The group was accompanied by Tom Western, Lecturer in Social and Cultural Geography at UCL, whose research focuses on creative citizenships and migratory activisms.
