{"id":83,"date":"2025-10-07T16:16:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T13:16:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastcity.ekke.gr\/?page_id=83"},"modified":"2026-03-04T13:49:42","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T11:49:42","slug":"laboratory","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lastcity.ekke.gr\/en\/laboratory\/","title":{"rendered":"Laboratory"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The purpose of the Laboratory of\u00a0Urban\u00a0Social Transformations\u00a0(LaSTcity)\u00a0is the systematic study and\u00a0analysis of the diverse processes\u00a0of production of\u00a0urban space, covering a wide range of socio-spatial and demographic phenomena across different geographical scales.\u00a0LaSTcity\u00a0belongs to the Institute of Social Research (ISR) and builds upon the research tradition of the former Institute of Urban and Rural Sociology of the National Centre for Social Research (1995\u20132012).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on theoretical and methodological approaches from the scientific fields of urban geography, urban sociology, demography, and urban planning,&nbsp;LaSTcity\u2019s&nbsp;research activity focuses particularly on topics such as: social inequalities, poverty and social segregation in cities; demographic transformations; the land and construction system; housing production and housing policies;&nbsp;land property issues;&nbsp;foreign and domestic investments&nbsp;in urban space; critical analysis of spatial policies and spatial governance; processes of urbanization and&nbsp;urban-rural&nbsp;relations; experiences and practices&nbsp;of&nbsp;everyday life&nbsp;in cities; the production and consumption of culture in urban space; urban social movements; the spatial dimensions of the climate crisis; and environmental and broader spatial justice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main scientific&nbsp;objectives&nbsp;of&nbsp;LaSTcity&nbsp;are defined as follows:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Systematic monitoring of socio-spatial and demographic indicators, and the production of thematic maps.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Production of&nbsp;scientific&nbsp;publications in the fields of interest&nbsp;of the Laboratory.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contributing to&nbsp;the&nbsp;educational activities&nbsp;of EKKE, either independently or in collaboration with universities and research institutes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participating in the submission of proposals for competitive research programs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disseminating scientific research and knowledge through policy briefs, press publications, and regular public events.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting student internships&nbsp;in areas relevant to the Laboratory\u2019s&nbsp;expertise.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>LaSTcity is one of the Laboratories of the Institute of Social Research of EKKE.
